Sub-Zero Door or Drawer Not Closing: Six Checks, in Order
Work through six checks in order: what is on the door shelf or the top of a drawer, whether the unit is level, whether the door sits square in its opening, the state of the gasket, the drawer runners, and finally the hinge or closer mechanism. The first two are free and account for most cases. A door that will not close is not a cosmetic problem — it lets humid air into the cabinet continuously.

Order first, list second
Search for this and you will get a list of everything that can stop a refrigerator door closing: hinges, gaskets, leveling, alignment, closers, cams. All of it is true and none of it is ordered, which is why people end up looking at a hinge on a door whose real problem is a jar of pickles.
The order below is the one we would use ourselves. It runs from what costs nothing to what needs a technician, and each step is genuinely worth doing before the next.
Two things are worth knowing before you start.
This is not cosmetic. A door standing a few millimeters open feeds the cabinet a continuous stream of warm humid air. In South Florida that means a unit that runs without ever stopping, frost building where it should not, condensation around the opening and mold behind the seal within months. The refrigerator does not complain; it just quietly works twice as hard.
A door that is hard to open is the opposite problem. If yours resists for a few seconds after closing and then opens normally, that is the pressure equalizing in a well-sealed cabinet. Nothing is wrong.
Step 1: empty the door and the drawer
Take everything off the door shelves. Take everything out of the top of the drawer. Try again.
This is not a token first step — it is the answer more often than everything below it put together. The things that do it:
- A tall bottle on a door shelf catching the edge of a cabinet shelf as the door swings
- A container pushed too far back on a shelf so the door meets it before it meets the cabinet
- A freezer basket loaded above the line of the opening
- A box that has shifted and is now sitting proud of the drawer front
- Ice built up at the back of a drawer, which is a different problem announcing itself this way
If the door closes cleanly with the shelves empty, put things back a few at a time until it does not. You have found it, it cost nothing, and you are done.
Step 2: check that it is level
Put a level on the top edge of the unit and across the front.
This is the second free check and the one people skip. A refrigerator that is out of level has its doors out of square with the cabinet, and every symptom that follows — a seal that will not grip along one edge, a door that swings open, a drawer that binds — is downstream of that. Adjusting the door will not fix a unit that has settled.
Freestanding and built-in are different problems here. A freestanding refrigerator has leveling feet at the front, and most are meant to sit very slightly higher at the front so that gravity helps the doors swing closed. A built-in is set into an opening and shimmed as part of its installation — there is no foot to turn as a quick fix. If a built-in has gone out of level, something in the installation has moved, and putting it right means dealing with the installation rather than the door.
Step 3: read the gap around the door
Close the door as far as it will go and look at the gap along each edge, in good light.
Even and parallel all the way around is what you want. That tells you the door is square in the opening and the problem is elsewhere.
A wedge shape — the gap wider at the top than the bottom, or on one side — means the door is not sitting square. Either the unit has moved, or the door has dropped on its hinge.
Even, but the door is not pulling home — it sits a few millimeters proud all the way around — points at the closing mechanism or a gasket that has gone hard enough to hold it off.
Step 4: run the paper test
Take a sheet of paper. Close the door on it so half is in and half is out. Pull.
Firm resistance means the seal is gripping at that point. Sliding out easily means it is not. Repeat every few inches around the whole perimeter of each door and drawer, and note where it fails, not just that it does:

A gasket that is dirty rather than dead is a common and cheerful outcome here — debris packed into the folds stops the seal sitting flat, and cleaning it restores the grip. Open out the folds and clean inside them with mild detergent, not bleach, which hardens the rubber and shortens its life.
Gaskets fail sooner here than the design assumes. Heat hardens the rubber, humidity means every gap costs more than it would elsewhere, and the extra cycling that comes with a hot kitchen adds mechanical wear. It is the part we replace most often in South Florida, and a door that will not close properly is one of the two ways it announces itself — the other being ice around the opening.
Step 5: clean the drawer runners
For a freezer drawer or a refrigerator drawer specifically.
Pull the drawer fully out and look at the rails it runs on. They collect crumbs, ice fragments, packaging film and dried spills, and a runner with debris in it will stop a drawer an inch short of closed. It feels like something has broken. It is a five-minute clean.
While the drawer is out, check the back of the compartment for ice build-up. A drawer that will not close because ice has formed behind it is not a drawer problem at all — that is a defrost or sealing problem — see frost and ice building up.
Step 6: stop at the hinge
If you have worked through the five steps above and the door still will not close properly, what remains is the hinge, the closing mechanism, or the alignment of the unit in its opening.
That is where owner troubleshooting ends on a built-in, and it is a deliberate stopping point rather than caution for its own sake. A built-in refrigerator door carries a custom panel matched to the cabinetry and is heavy; its hinges are adjustable but they are adjustable within an installation that was set up as a whole. Slackening a hinge on a door that weighs what these weigh, in an opening with stone above it and joinery either side, is a good way to turn a door problem into a cabinetry problem.
What to have ready when you call
- Does it close cleanly when the door shelves are empty? If yes, it is contents and you have fixed it.
- Is the unit level?
- Is the gap even or wedge-shaped?
- Where does the paper test fail?
- Is there ice anywhere it should not be?
Those five answers separate a gasket from an alignment from a hinge before anybody arrives, and they are the difference between a short visit and a long one.
What it costs to leave it
Worth being plain about, since a door that nearly closes is easy to live with.
A permanent gap means the unit never stops running, which is compressor hours it does not get back. It means moisture entering continuously, which becomes frost on the evaporator, which reduces airflow, which makes the unit run even more. It means condensation around the opening, which becomes mold in the gasket folds and then in the drain.
None of that is dramatic and all of it compounds. The repair at the front of that chain is usually a gasket — among the least expensive parts on the machine. The repair at the end of it is not.

No, that one is by design. Closing the door pushes air out of a sealed cabinet, and the slight vacuum that leaves takes a few seconds to equalize. A door that resists briefly and then opens normally is a door sealing well. It is the opposite complaint from the one this guide is about.
