### The fastest diagnosis is the code

The light is the display asking to be read. Behind it there is usually a code — and the code is the fastest diagnosis there is, because it names the subsystem before anyone opens the unit. On some series it sits behind a key sequence; if you can see it, photograph it.

It says the control board has logged a condition it wants looked at. It does not say the appliance is failing, and it does not say it is fine either — a service light can sit alongside perfectly normal temperatures for weeks while a condenser slowly loses the fight, which is exactly the case where attention is cheapest.
