# Sub-Zero Refrigerator Not Cooling but the Freezer Is Fine: What That Split Means

## Why the split is the most useful thing you have noticed

On an ordinary side-by-side refrigerator there is one sealed system. One compressor makes cold in one place — the freezer — and a fan pushes some of that cold air through a duct and a motorized damper into the refrigerator section. That design is why the classic symptom on a mainstream unit is exactly this one, and why it is so vague: warm refrigerator, cold freezer means the air is not getting through, and it could be the damper, the duct, the fan, the defrost system or the control telling any of them what to do.

A built-in Sub-Zero is not built that way. It has **dual refrigeration** — two sealed systems, two compressors, two evaporators, two thermostats, in one cabinet. The freezer makes its own cold and the refrigerator makes its own cold, and neither borrows from the other. That is the whole reason the brand exists: freezer air is dry, and pushing it into the refrigerator is what makes lettuce limp in a week.

Which means that on your unit, the split you have noticed is not a vague symptom. It is a diagnosis that has already happened. Everything shared between the two compartments is working: power is arriving, the control board is alive, the door seals are doing their job, the condenser is rejecting heat well enough to keep one system running. **What is left is one system, and it is the refrigerator's.**

If you are not sure whether your unit has two systems, stand beside it in a quiet kitchen for a few minutes. Two compressors cycle independently — you will hear one start while the other is already running, or one stop while the other continues. Almost every full-height built-in Sub-Zero has two. A single-zone wine cabinet, a beverage center or an undercounter drawer unit has one, because it only has one compartment to cool.

## What it usually turns out to be

In rough order of how often we find it, and of what it costs to put right.

### The refrigerator's evaporator fan has stopped

Each system has an evaporator — a coil that gets cold — and a fan that moves cabinet air across it. If that fan stops, the coil still gets cold and the compartment does not, because nothing is carrying the cold anywhere. The coil then keeps pulling moisture out of the still air around it and builds a block of frost, which is why a stopped fan and a frosted coil so often arrive together. The tell is silence and a specific pattern of cold: open the refrigerator and the back wall near the vents is icy or frosted while the shelves in the middle are at room temperature. On a working unit you can usually feel air movement at the vents within a minute of closing and re-opening the door.

### The evaporator coil has frosted over

Every refrigerator defrosts itself on a schedule — a small heater melts the frost off the coil and the water runs to a drain. When the defrost heater, its thermostat or its control stops working, each cycle leaves a little more ice behind until the coil is encased and air cannot pass through it at all. The compartment goes warm gradually over days, not suddenly, and it often improves slightly after the unit has been open for a while and gets worse again overnight.

### The refrigerator's sealed system has lost refrigerant

Two separate systems means two places a leak can happen. If the refrigerator circuit has lost its charge, its compressor runs and runs and the compartment never comes down. The tell is a compressor that never shuts off paired with a compartment that is only slightly cool — and, on a unit that has been like this for a while, a compressor that is hot to the touch.

This is the expensive end, and it is also the one nobody should attempt at home. Refrigerant work is regulated: under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act it is illegal to knowingly vent refrigerant, and recovery equipment is required to do the job properly. ### The drain has blocked and the water has frozen

Water from each defrost cycle leaves through a small drain. Block it — and in a humid climate it blocks with a film of biological growth more often than with debris — and the water backs up and freezes at the bottom of the coil housing. It behaves like a frosted evaporator, but you usually get a warning first: water pooling under the crisper drawers before the compartment ever goes warm.

### The control board has stopped driving one system

Least common, and worth naming because it is the one case where the split does not mean what the rest of this article says it means. A board that has stopped commanding the refrigerator's compressor or fan produces the same symptom with nothing mechanically wrong. It is diagnosed by elimination, and by reading what the unit itself reports — Sub-Zero units store service codes even when nothing is showing on the display.

## What you can check in ten minutes

None of these is a repair. They are the things that tell us — or tell you — which of the causes above you are looking at, and occasionally one of them ends the problem outright.

- **Read the actual temperature, not the setting.** Put a glass of water in the middle of the refrigerator, leave it four hours, then put a thermometer in it. A compartment that reads 45°F is a different problem from one that reads 60°F, and "it feels warm" is not a measurement.- **Listen at the vents.** Open the refrigerator, wait for the light to go, then close and reopen the door and listen. If the fan is running you will usually hear it and feel air at the vents.- **Look at the back wall of the refrigerator compartment.** Frost or a sheet of ice where the vents are is the frosted-coil picture. A dry, room-temperature back wall with the freezer still working is the fan or the sealed system.- **Check the door is actually closing.** A shelf pushed too far forward, a container against the inner door, a gasket folded under itself. It sounds trivial; it accounts for a real share of the calls we take, and it costs nothing to rule out.- **Check the display for a service message.** A flashing service light, a wrench icon or a code is the unit telling you what it has already worked out. **Do not turn the unit off and on repeatedly to see if it recovers.** A compressor restarted against a system that still has pressure in it is a compressor working far harder than it was designed to, and it is one of the ways a fixable problem becomes a compressor replacement. One power cycle is diagnostic. Six is damage.

## What South Florida does to this

Two things here make this symptom more common than it is elsewhere, and both are worth knowing before somebody tells you the unit is old and finished.

**Humidity loads the evaporator.** Every time the door opens, the air that comes in carries far more moisture than the same volume of air in a dry climate, and all of that moisture ends up as frost on a coil that has to melt it off again on the next defrost cycle. A defrost system that would have coped for another five years in Denver reaches its limit here sooner, and the frosted coil above is the result.

**Salt reaches further inland than people expect.** On the barrier islands and along the Intracoastal, aluminum evaporator fins and the copper joints around them corrode measurably faster. It is the single most common reason we find a pinhole leak on a unit that has never been touched.

If your unit is within a mile or two of open water — Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour, the Fort Lauderdale beaches — and it is over ten years old, a refrigerator-side sealed system problem is a genuinely likely diagnosis rather than a worst case. ## What the repair costs

Starting points for this equipment in South Florida. The exact figure is set after an on-site diagnostic, because the model, the access and which part has actually gone move it — and anyone giving you a final number over the phone has not seen the unit.

## How long the food has

The number that matters is 40°F. Below it, perishable food is in the safe zone. Above it, the USDA's guidance is that perishables should not sit for more than two hours before they are discarded — and in a kitchen where the ambient is 78°F, a refrigerator that has stopped cooling reaches that point quickly.

Practically: move dairy, meat, seafood and leftovers to the freezer side, which on your unit is still working and is not affected by what is wrong. Condiments, whole fruit and vegetables can wait. ## When to book somebody

Book the same day if the refrigerator is above 40°F, if the compressor has not stopped in hours, or if there is a service code on the display. Those three all get worse on their own.

If the compartment is holding in the low 40s, you have moved anything perishable, and the freezer is unaffected, the next available visit is fine — but do not let it run for weeks. A frosted evaporator is a self-feeding problem, and a compressor running continuously against a leak is spending its remaining life doing nothing useful.
