# Mold in a Refrigerator: Where It Grows in a Humid Climate and How to Get It Out

## The shelves are not where it is

Almost everyone who cleans a refrigerator because of mold or a smell cleans the parts they can see — the shelves, the walls, the drawers — and is surprised when the problem comes back within a fortnight.

That is because the inside of a cold compartment is a poor place for mold to grow. It is too cold and too dry. Mold wants moisture, a moderate temperature and something organic to eat, and it finds all three in four places, none of which are the shelves:

- **Inside the folds of the door gasket**, which sits at the warm boundary between the cabinet and the room and is damp nearly all the time- **The drip pan** under the unit, which is a shallow tray of standing water by design- **Inside the defrost drain**, where a biofilm builds along the tube wall- **The air filter**, if your unit has one, which is a cartridge that absorbs odor until it cannot

Clean those four and the problem generally goes away for good. Clean the shelves and it comes back.

Every one of those four fills faster in South Florida than the manuals assume, and it is not a marginal difference. Ambient humidity is what determines how much moisture enters the cabinet on each door opening, how quickly a gasket stays damp, and how much water passes through the drain into the pan. The intervals printed for a national audience are written for a drier average kitchen than anyone here has. We treat this as roughly a two-thirds interval: what a manual calls annual is two or three times a year on the coast.

## Step 1: empty it and switch it off

Move the food to a cooler and switch the unit off at the control panel.

This is not fussiness. If you clean a running cabinet, condensation forms on every cold surface you have just dried, and the last step of this job — getting everything genuinely dry — becomes impossible. Give yourself a cabinet at room temperature to work in.

## Step 2: the gasket is where it lives

Take this one slowly, because it is the one that matters most.

A refrigerator door seal is not a flat strip. It is a hollow, folded profile with a magnet inside, and it has channels and folds that never see daylight. Open each fold out with a finger and look inside: black specks, a gray film, or a dark line running along the inside of the fold.

Clean inside the folds with a mild detergent solution and something soft — a cloth, an old toothbrush, a soft nail brush. Work all the way around every door and every drawer. Then dry it.

**Do not use bleach on a gasket.** It attacks the rubber, hardens it, and shortens its life substantially. A hardened gasket stops sealing; a gasket that stops sealing lets warm humid room air into the cabinet; and that dampness is the reason there was mold in the first place. Bleaching a moldy seal is a very efficient way to guarantee the mold returns.

## Step 3: the surfaces you can see

The straightforward part. Shelves, walls, door bins, drawers.

A mild detergent solution does the work. If the problem is odor as much as visible growth, a dilute vinegar solution is better — it deals with the smell rather than covering it, and it leaves nothing behind that you would rather not have near food.

Two things people miss: **take the drawers all the way out** and clean the runners and the recess they sit in, which collects liquid that nobody ever sees; and **check the underside of shelves**, where spills travel by capillary action and sit.

## Step 4: flush the drain

The defrost drain carries meltwater out of the cabinet several times a day, which makes it a permanently damp tube — an ideal home for a biofilm. That biofilm is both a smell source and, as it thickens, the thing that eventually blocks the drain and puts water in the bottom of your refrigerator.

If your model gives you access to the drain opening in the freezer floor, flush it with warm water. A turkey baster is the traditional tool.

**Never push anything rigid down the drain tube.** It is soft, it curves out of sight immediately, and directly behind it are components whose repair is one of the largest figures on our price list. A wire coat hanger has ended more refrigerators than any other household tool.

## Step 5: replace the air filter

If your unit has an air cartridge, replace it rather than cleaning it. These work by absorbing odor compounds, and a saturated one cannot be washed back to life — it will hold and re-release exactly the smell you are trying to remove.

If yours has been in longer than you can remember, it is contributing to the problem no matter how clean everything else is.

## Step 6: dry it completely

Wipe every surface dry, open the gasket folds and dry inside them, and leave the doors open for a while before you restart.

This step gets skipped and it is the one that decides whether the job lasted. Mold is a moisture problem. If you restart a damp cabinet, you have redistributed the mold rather than removed it.

## Step 7: deal with the cause

Now the important question: **why was it damp enough to grow mold?**

If the answer is a one-off — a power outage, a door left open, a spill nobody found — then you have finished, and it will not come back.

If there is no such answer, something is letting moisture in continuously, and it is almost always the door. Test each seal with a sheet of paper: close the door on it and pull. If it slides out with no resistance, that section of the seal is not gripping.

Other candidates:

- A drawer or freezer basket that is not pushing fully home- A jar or bottle on a door shelf holding the door slightly open- A door that has dropped on its hinge- A unit that has gone out of level, putting the doors out of square

**Mold that comes back within a few weeks is not a cleaning problem.** It is a sealing problem wearing a cleaning problem's clothes. At that point the useful spend is a gasket, not another afternoon with a brush — and in this climate gaskets are the part we replace most often, for exactly this reason.

## When it is not really mold

Two things get mistaken for it, and both have different answers.

**A general bad smell with nothing visible** is usually the drip pan or the drain rather than mold in the cabinet. On a built-in, reaching the pan is not an owner job — that is a service visit, and it is a short one.

**Black specks that wipe away and reappear** in the ice or the water can be a degrading filter housing or seal rather than growth. If the taste and the specks arrive together, that is the water path, not the cabinet.

## What prevents it

- Keep the gaskets clean, and test them with paper twice a year while you are doing it- Change the air filter on schedule rather than when you remember- Deal with spills when they happen, especially anything that runs under a drawer- Do not leave doors open while deciding what to cook — in this climate that is a real moisture load- Have the drip pan and drain seen during regular maintenance, since you cannot reach them

That list is short and it is genuinely enough. Mold in a refrigerator is one of the few problems on this site where the owner, not the technician, is the one holding the solution.
