# Sub-Zero wine storage

### Wine cabinets do not break loudly

A refrigerator that stops is obvious within a day. A wine cabinet drifts two or three degrees, holds there, and says nothing — and in a market full of second homes that can go unnoticed for a season. By the time somebody notices, the collection has paid for the delay.

### What usually turns out to be wrong

- One zone out of range on a multi-zone unit while the other is fine
- Humidity drifting, which shows on labels and corks before it shows on a display
- Vibration — a fan or a compressor mount rather than the shelving
- Glass doors: seals, heaters, and condensation between the panes

### Why this climate is hard on them

Ambient heat and humidity make a wine cabinet work harder here than the same unit would anywhere else in the country, and a condenser that cannot shed heat shows up first as a zone that will not quite hold. Near the water, salt shortens the life of the coil on top of that.
